Invisalign®

Woman holding clear alignersFor years, braces were the go-to treatment option for those who had misaligned teeth. However, today there is a new option: Invisalign. This treatment provides the same end results, but it does so in a different way. Patients who come to Everglades Family Dental for braces may find that using Invisalign is a better option.

The Basics of Invisalign

Unlike braces, Invisalign gives you more control and comfort over your teeth-straightening treatment. Instead of having metal wires attached to your teeth, Invisalign uses a series of aligners. These aligners are similar to mouthguards in some ways. You wear one in your mouth for most of the day, but you can remove it to eat or drink. These aligners are made out of a clear plastic, which means they are almost invisible. Each of the aligners is carefully designed to shift your teeth a little more than the previous one. As you move through the sequence, then, your teeth slowly move into position. Each aligner places pressure on the teeth, but this pressure is not noticeable or painful. Invisalign may take a little longer to straighten your teeth than braces would, but in the end, you do get perfectly straight teeth.

Getting Invisalign

Invisalign is a good option for many of our patients, especially older children and adults. The first step is to create the aligners. We will use special computer equipment to take measurements of your mouth and teeth. We then use a program to determine which teeth need to shift and by how much. The aligners are then created to achieve this goal. Once you have the aligners, all you have to do is wear them as instructed. The early aligners may need to be worn for 20 hours or more, but as you go, you may not need to wear them as much. We will have you come in often to measure how well the process is progressing. At times, we may need you to go back to the previous aligner or continue to wear an aligner for a little more time.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign has a number of benefits. Since you can remove the aligners, you can eat any foods you want without worrying that you will get anything stuck in the braces. This gives you much more freedom than braces do. You also do not have to worry about people making comments about your teeth because the aligners are very hard to see. Many people will not even notice them. Another benefit is that you can remove the aligners as needed, so you can resettle them if they feel uncomfortable or if something gets under them.

Is Invisalign Right for You?

Invisalign is the right solution for many adults, especially those who worry about wearing braces. Older children and teens may also be good candidates for Invisalign if they will wear the aligners as directed. Younger children may take the aligners out too often. There are some patients who will not be able to use Invisalign, but it is hard to say if you will be one of them until we look at your teeth.
