How Getting Dehydrated Can Lead to Problems with Your Teeth and Gums

Posted on 12/23/2021 by Weo Admin
How Getting Dehydrated Can Lead to Problems with Your Teeth and GumsDehydration is a condition that happens when you use or lose more fluid than your body can replenish. This is a problem because your body doesn't have enough water to perform normal functions. Dehydration also occurs in hot weather. If you exercise or do not drink enough water in hotter climates, your body will get dehydrated. Usually, you can replace your lost fluids by increasing the amount of water you drink. However, severe dehydration does require medical assistance. Call your medical provider now if you feel you need help.

Dehydration is Not Good For Your Mouth

If you are dehydrated, you are not producing saliva. Your teeth and gums depend on your saliva to keep them healthy. Your saliva washes your teeth, tongue, and gums to rid them of food debris and keep your breath smelling nice. Saliva also strengthens your enamel as it contains calcium and other minerals. Just having saliva on your teeth is beneficial as it boosts your enamel with these nutrients. If you are prone to stains on your teeth, you will want to hydrate well as saliva washes away some of the pigments which would otherwise stain your teeth. For all these reasons, it is important to sustain your fluids as you will want to have plenty of saliva available to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Prioritize Your Dental Exams

Call us to make your next dental appointment. Let us know when you come for your exam what medication you are taking. Some medications tend to dry out your mouth, which could complicate your risk if you are prone to being easily dehydrated.

We look forward to working with you to remedy your dehydration and help you be proactive in the future concerning your oral health.
