Fix Your Sensitive Teeth to Enjoy Cold Treats

Posted on 10/15/2025 by Everglades Family Dental
Refreshing lemonade drinks. Ice cream, popsicles, lemonade - all of these summer favorites can be uncomfortable, even painful, if you have sensitive teeth. That sharp, sudden pain that can shoot through your teeth with a cold bite is caused by exposed dentin, the inner layer of your tooth that contains tiny tubules leading directly to the nerve. Cold, acidic, or sweet foods and drinks can trigger these nerves, causing the familiar twinge of sensitivity.

But don't lose hope for summertime treats! There are several ways to manage and even eliminate your tooth sensitivity. Here's what you need to know:

Identifying the Cause of Sensitive Teeth

The first step is to understand what's causing your sensitive teeth. While cold foods and drinks are the most common culprits, other potential triggers include:
•  Improper brushing: Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can wear away your tooth enamel and expose the dentin.
•  Teeth grinding: This habit can wear down your enamel and cause receding gums, exposing more dentin.
•  Acidic foods and drinks: Citrus fruits, soda, and other acidic foods can erode tooth enamel.
•  Gum disease: This infection can damage your gums, exposing the roots of your teeth, which are also sensitive.
•  Recent dental work: Fillings, crowns, and other dental procedures can temporarily increase sensitivity.

If you're experiencing tooth sensitivity, schedule an appointment with your dentist. They can help you identify the cause and recommend the best course of treatment.

Managing Sensitive Teeth

Once you know the cause of your sensitivity, you can start taking steps to manage it. Here are some helpful tips:
•  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle brushing technique.
•  Switch to a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. These toothpastes contain ingredients that can help block the tubules in your dentin and reduce sensitivity.
•  Avoid acidic foods and drinks. If you do consume them, rinse your mouth with water afterward.
•  Limit cold foods and drinks. Try drinking cold beverages through a straw or letting them warm up slightly before taking a sip.
•  Consider using a desensitizing gel. These gels are applied directly to your teeth and can help block the tubules and reduce pain.
•  Talk to your dentist about restorative options. If your sensitivity is severe, your dentist may recommend fillings, crowns, or other restorative treatments to protect your teeth and reduce sensitivity.

By following these tips and working with your dentist, you can manage your sensitive teeth and enjoy all of your favorite summer treats without pain. Don't let tooth sensitivity hold you back from enjoying the simple pleasures of the season!
