I Think I Have a Cracked Tooth

Tooth enamel is the strongest substance produced by your body, so it is understandable if you think your teeth are indestructible. However, while your teeth are very strong, it is possible to damage them, especially as you age. Here is some information about cracked teeth and how our dentist can fix your cracked tooth.

Your Tooth Anatomy

All human teeth consist of three layers. The tough outer layer is called tooth enamel. The next layer, dentin, is also tough and hard. Unlike tooth enamel, dentin is yellow rather than white. Dentists call the innermost layer of your tooth the pulp. It is soft tissue full of blood vessels and nerves.

Why Do Teeth Crack?

You can develop a crack in your tooth enamel for several reasons. Usually, dentists call a defect in your tooth a crack if it affects only the tooth enamel or the enamel and a little bit of dentin. If your cracked tooth reaches the tooth pulp, it may be called a break or a chip.

There are several reasons you can crack a tooth. With aging, your tooth enamel becomes thinner and easier to crack. Other causes can be clenching and grinding teeth while sleeping, tooth decay and gum disease, or by accident.

How to Fix a Cracked Tooth

Dentists have several options to fix your cracked tooth. If you have a slight crack in your tooth, our dentist can probably fix it with bonding. Bonding is a plastic resin that our dentist can fit over the crack and harden it with a special light.

If you have a more severely cracked tooth, our dentist may want to place a crown over the tooth to cover and protect it from further damage. If you have several cracked teeth, you may want to consider applying veneers to give your smile a gorgeous new look.
