How Do You Take Care of Your Mouth After Tooth Extraction

How Do You Take Care of Your Mouth After Tooth ExtractionTooth extraction is beneficial when done correctly by a professional. It is usually the last result in dental care, in cases where a cavity has dug too deep, or gum disease has weakened teeth and rendered them loose. Tooth extraction offers relief from the pain of exposed nerves and prevents bacteria from causing more harm to the tooth and gum. Therefore, post-operation care is required to smoothen the healing process after removing an affected tooth.

Keep the Extracted Area Sterile

You should avoid brushing over the area with your toothbrush until the area has healed well enough or until you receive the go-ahead from your dentist. However, this does not mean neglecting the rest of your teeth. You should brush the rest of your teeth normally to avoid the build-up of bacteria and plaque, which can transfer to your open wound. Your orthodontist will probably give you a rinsing agent over your extracted area. Rinse using antimicrobial mouthwash at least three times a day.

Foods to eat and to avoid

Stock up on soft foods since it is inadvisable to eat crunchy food that can reopen the wound. Yogurt, rice, oatmeal, and pasta are some dishes you can add to your diet until you are healed enough.

Follow Your Prescription

Take your medication as prescribed by your physician. Avoid painkillers like aspirin, and consult your dentist on any painkillers you buy over the counter. Ensure you complete your antibiotics dosage and any aftercare treatment your dentist puts you on.

Avoid Strenuous Activities

Slow down on any activities that require too much of your energy until you are well enough to pick up on them. These include going to the gym, picking up heavy stuff, and any heavy-duty activities. These activities can quicken your heartbeat, leading to excessive bleeding from the extracted area.
